In 2019 St Michaels signed up to the A Rocha Eco Church scheme enhancing our commitment to Care for Creation in Service to God. Part of our commitment is about living our values of sustainability and caring for the environment throughout the whole of our church life. In September 2021 we were awarded Silver Eco Church Status. We also hold the Fairtrade ‘Place of Worship’ Award’

Caring for creation is a fundamental part of mission

In 1984 the Anglican Communion published a statement of mission, devised to explain further the purpose of the church in declaring God’s love and power in the world. This took the form of 5 marks, with the fifth mark of mission stating:

To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth.

St Michaels commitment to becoming an Eco Church and seeking to care for creation isn’t just some new fashionable project, but is demonstrating our commitment to serve God in all things as faithful stewards of all he has given us.

Get Involved

Our green agenda is spearheaded by our Eco Action Group which meets every other month to discuss projects and developments regarding our annual eco-targets and other matters.  We work to make our church site more nature-friendly while adopting more ‘eco-friendly’ practices and sustainable life-styles both as an organisation and as individuals.  We also work with a range of other groups and organisations in the community to further these goals in our area.  You’re welcome to get involved: to find out about the next meeting of the Eco Action Group or projects with which you could get involved please contact the St Michael’s Office at office@bramhall.church

Our targets for 2022 are:

1)     Make a wildlife-friendly pond or marsh area / bog garden in the church grounds.

2)     Install further birdboxes to bring total to fifteen.

3)     Observe Fairtrade Fortnight (21st February to 6th March).

4)     Run clothes swap events.

5)     Hold workshops to demonstrate and encourage recycling and crafts skills.

6)     Reduce gross CO2 emissions from the St Michael’s site.

7)     Encourage green journeys to church.

8)     Target(s) asking as many of the congregation as are willing to do [various things] at home / in daily lives.

9)     Make two hedgehog ‘nests’ (or install hedgehog boxes).  Make ‘nests’ for bees of solitary species.  Plant summer-flowering bulbs.
