Bramhall St Michaels hosts many Baptisms throughout the year, typically on the last Sunday of each month at a special 12 midday service. If you would like to discuss a possible future Baptism, in the first instance, please contact us through the usual channels or submit the Enquiries Form below and one of our baptism co-ordinators, either Chris or Sally, will be in touch.
As baptism co-ordinators, Chris Ainscough and her daughter Sally Harwood take very seriously their commitment to communicating with a child’s parents or adult candidate to try to accommodate their requests. A pre-baptismal meeting is arranged in order to outline the service, emphasise the importance of the promises to be made by the Parents/Godparents and Sponsors, and to explain the symbols of Baptism and what they represent. This meeting also gives the parents or candidate an opportunity to ask any questions they wish and to be shown around the Church.
Sometimes more than one child or adult can be baptised during a service, but this is flexible and can be discussed with the Priest. A maximum of three can be baptised at the same service. Photography is allowed, though we kindly request no flash during services themselves. Baptism services are completely free of charge. In the Church of England there is no requirement for Parents or Godparents to be baptised as such, though technically non-baptised Godparents are called “Sponsors”, and all should feel comfortable with the promises they are asked to take. In terms of Godparents, there is no set number and it varies from family to family. Typically, there are at least three Godparents – two the same sex as the child and one of the opposite sex. Parents can be Godparents. A rich source of information on child baptisms (i.e. Christenings), for parents and godparents alike, can be found at the Church of England’s own special Christenings website, whilst further information regarding mature baptisms is available at the Church of England’s main website.
We look forward to hearing from you.
